When you are a kid you just lose the thread. You probably keep listening, maybe nodding amiably — you want to please the grown-up. Prepare instead. You have created a uniquely helpful place on the internet to serve the church. Thank you. Thank you Sandy!
About This Item
You have no idea how much your affirmation means to me. Much of the time I just keep plodding on for my own sense of personal mission. So, albeit often as a voice crying in the wilderness, I press on. Some days, I hear wonderful things from wonderful friends like you.
Fragments of Letters and Homilies of Saint Avitus (Alcimus Ecdidius Avitus), Bishop of Vienne
While you have not completely convinced me to write one out 28 years of public school teaching has given me confidence or bravado? Ugh, I hit post and left my last thought as an incomplete fragment. While not convinced I need to write out the message, you do have me thinking about it. I should think 28 years of teaching would indeed prepare you well to speak to kids off the cuff. If one can pull it off, I think the best prep for any sermon starts with a manuscript, and then gets distilled down to a detailed outline, and then even further to a very lean outline of key words or bullets.
Your email address will not be published. As you put it, I count on my preparation of the main sermon to back me up. Success by what criteria? The challenge of communicating with children. If you are a grown up, you are used to listening to sentences that go in circles, or sentences that go on, and on, and on or sentences that stop halfway through a thought, or sentences that switch direction midstream.
